The Village of Haverstraw, awarded The RFP to KaN to enhance its Waterfront Park and create a welcoming space to honor its multicultural community rich in history and heritage. The design will provide a space for community members, and visitors to reflect on the contribution of migrants, while incorporating key historical elements of Haverstraw heritage and its deep connection to the founding of the region. The plan is to create a timeline of local migrants contributions to the history of the Town with dedicated markers. The new design shall seek to make physical connections, unifying programmed spaces with Bowline Pond and the Village of Haverstraw while also connecting people, place, and history. A dialogue can be opened, not only through the information presented in the memorial exhibit that tells the story of immigrants who made Haverstraw their home, but also through referencing the land use history of the site with hardscape material selection—Bowline Pond previously served as a clay extraction pit. In this way, the design will present a meaningful connection to the community that goes beyond the design aesthetic.
